Beef

Cattle typically move between properties before slaughter. Public records tend to describe the slaughterhouse and the final property well, and the earlier stages of the animal’s life poorly. That asymmetry is the central evidence problem in beef.

The evidence chain

  1. Identify the slaughterhouse or exporting entity and confirm its registration status.
  2. Check public sanction, labour, and environmental embargo registers for that entity.
  3. Establish the supplying property, where the supplier provides transport documentation.
  4. Assess the properties that supplied that property — the "indirect supplier" problem.

What this does not establish

  • Indirect suppliers — the properties that supplied the property that supplied the slaughterhouse — are generally not established from public record.
  • Animal transport documentation is typically obtained from the supplier rather than a public source.
  • A clean result on a direct supplier says nothing about the tiers behind it.
