Coffee

Coffee frequently passes through cooperatives, which aggregate output from many smallholders. This makes the cooperative highly visible in public record and the underlying producers largely invisible.

The evidence chain

  1. Identify the exporting entity or cooperative and confirm its registration status.
  2. Check public sanction and labour registers for that entity.
  3. Establish the producing membership, which is usually a supplier-provided list rather than a public record.

What this does not establish

  • Smallholder producers behind a cooperative are generally not individually recorded in any public register.
  • Aggregation means a finding about a cooperative cannot be attributed to any particular member, and the absence of a finding cannot clear them.
