Timber

Timber evidence usually turns on species identification and harvest authorisation, both of which are documentary rather than observable from public registries alone.

The evidence chain

  1. Identify the exporting entity and confirm its registration status.
  2. Check public sanction, labour, and environmental registers.
  3. Establish species identification at the level of specificity the destination market requires.
  4. Establish harvest and transport authorisation from documentation the supplier provides.

What this does not establish

  • Species declared at genus level rather than species level cannot be assessed against requirements that are species-specific.
  • Harvest authorisation documents are frequently not verifiable through any public interface.
